Anya Taylor-Joy leads the fifth instalment in the Mad Max franchise, Furiosa.

Directed by George Miller, Furiosa serves as a prequel to 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road and charts the origins of the character, who was originally played by Charlize Theron.

Other cast members in the prequel include Chris Hemsworth, Alyla Browne, Tom Burke, Lachy Hulme, Nathan Jones, and Josh Helman.

Along with directing Furiosa, Miller has co-written the story with his former Fury Road collaborator Nico Lathouris.

After tracking down Dementus (Chris Hemsworth) following the 40-day wasteland war, Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy) confronts him and tries to make him remember who she is.

When he eventually does remember that she is the girl he kidnapped years prior, Dementus is impressed and tells her he’s been waiting for someone worthy of him. “Do this right, and you become me,” he remarks while on his knees, before adding: “The question is, do you have it in you to make it epic?”

Through a narrator, we discover Furiosa doesn’t actually kill Dementus straight away, as described in various rumours and fables. Instead, we see Dementus is slowly rotting away at the top of the Citadel, with a tree growing out of his flesh. This tree was planted by Furiosa using the seed her mother gave her as a child. In a shot which mirrors the opening scene, we then see Furiosa taking a fruit from the tree growing from Dementus.

In the final scene, Furiosa is seen smuggling Immortan Joe’s wives out of the Citadel in a war rig, setting up events directly into Mad Max: Fury Road. This is emphasised over the closing credits, as snippets of scenes from Fury Road play out.

Does the film have a post-credits scene?

A very brief one. At the end of the credits, following the footage from Mad Max: Fury Road, a short clip shows a bobblehead from Nux’s (Nicholas Hoult) car wobbling – in what’s likely just a small easter egg for fans of the original.
