Kevin Costner in tears during Cannes standing ovation for passion project ‘Horizon’

Kevin Costner was seen getting visibly emotional after receiving a standing ovation for his new film Horizon: An American Saga.

The Western, which is described as a two-part event and has been a long-term passion project for the actor and director, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival yesterday (May 19).

Following the screening, Costner reportedly received a seven-minute standing ovation, with footage showing the actor in tears.

Horizon has been in the work for 35 years, and is set during the American Civil War and focuses on the expansion of the American West.

Speaking at Cannes after the premiere, Costner said (via Variety): “I’m sorry you had to clap that long for me to understand that I should speak.

“Such good people. Such a good moment, not just for me, but for the actors that came with me, for people who believed in me who continued to work. It’s a funny business, and I’m so glad I found it. There’s no place like here. I’ll never forget this – either will my children.”

Meanwhile, last week Costner opened up about his decision to leave TV series Yellowstone, having previously been reported to have departed the series to focus on Horizon.

In a new interview, he disputed claims that was the case, alleging the Yellowstone team was not telling the “truth”. The star claimed that filming for Horizon was scheduled for his days off filming the show, telling Deadline: “I fit it into the gaps. They just kept moving their gaps.”

Coster added that Yellowstone was his “first priority” though claimed the production team were “doing a tap dance”. He also said he had a contract to film another three seasons, and questioned why the team “didn’t stick up” for him amid rumours he wasn’t available to film.

He further claimed he left filming Horizon for a “whole month” to film Yellowstone‘s five B season, though when he arrived he alleges there was “no script” and “things imploded”.

“I left exactly when they wanted, and it made it hard on me…I’ve never missed a day of work. I’ve never left before fulfilling my contractual obligations,” Costner added.
