The director of Daniel Craig‘s new film Queer has suggested that James Bond could have been gay.

Speaking at a press conference, Luca Guadagnino was asked about the casting of Craig and whether 007 could ever be a gay man.

“Guys, let’s be adults in the room for a second,” he said (via The Hollywood Reporter). “There is no way around the fact that nobody would ever know what James Bond desires, period. The important thing is that he does his missions properly.”

He also praised Craig adding: “I have been an admirer of this gentleman for a long time. A gentleman that was in the [casting] room was really the one that was not pragmatic and said to me, ‘What about Daniel Craig?’ And I said, ‘I thought about him, but he’s never going to say yes.’

“And he said to me, ‘Let’s ask.’ And he said yes. And the yes was a definitive yes, he’s one of the greatest actors. It’s a privilege to work with someone like him.”

The film, which also stars Jason Schwartzman, Lesley Manville and Omar Apollo, premiered at the 2024 Venice Film Festival last night (September 3).

Queer is adapted from the novel written by William S. Burroughs which follows an outcast American expat (Craig) who becomes infatuated with a younger man (Drew Starkey) in Mexico City in 1940s.

Elsewhere, the first image of Craig in the upcoming third Knives Out film Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery was recently shared.

It is slated for a 2025 release and will be the follow-up to 2022’s Glass Onion.

Former James Bond star George Lazenby also recently retired from acting at the age of 84.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson has been rumoured to be cast as the next James Bond.
